ChocoPerfection bars uses the sweeteners oligofructose, which is derived from ground-up chicory root, and erythritol, which comes from fermented natural foods. These ingredients don't effect insulin levels (zero on the glycemic index) or have a laxative effect like malitol. Most "low carb" chocolates use malitol which does increase blood sugar and often causes intestinal discomfort. So, here's to chocolate on a "diet!" Click HERE to find all "healthified" chocolates.
I often get questions about the cost of the ingredients I recommend. I calculated the price for my ice cream recipe with all the top notch ingredients like organic coconut oil, Just Like Sugar and farm raised grass fed eggs. The results:
My recipe = $2.59 per pint.
Ben and Jerry's = about $4.00 per pint
A Medium shake from Dairy Queen (which is about a pint) = $2.99.
You can also buy most of the ingredients I use in bulk and store in a chest freezer to lower the cost even more! Eating healthy costs you a lot less in the long run due to medical bills but it can cost less now versus buying pre-packaged at the grocery store!

"HEALTHIFIED" MINT CHIP ICE CREAM:
5 egg yolks3/4 cup "Just Like Sugar"
1/4 cup erythritol
1 tsp stevia glycerite
1 cup heavy whipping cream
1 cup unsweetnened almond milk
1 tsp spirulina (for health benefits and green color)
1 tsp Celtic sea salt
1 tsp mint extract or 1/4 cup pureed fresh mint leaves
1 Dark Chocolate ChocoPerfection bar, chopped fine
In a medium saucepan place the egg yolks and sweeteners in to mix on high with a hand mixer. Whip yolks until light in color and double in size. Stir in the whipping cream. Place the saucepan onto medium heat on the stove and cook, stirring constantly (I used my hand mixer). Stir until thickened into a custard. Remove from heat and stir in the almond milk, salt and mint. Let cool completely (I cooled overnight...it was hard to wait!). Place into your ice cream machine (click HERE to find the one I love AND it is 1/2 off the original price!!!) and watch the magic happen within 45 or according to your ice cream maker's directions. Stir in chunks of ChocoPerfection bar. Freeze until set. Makes 5 servings.

Just Like Sugar contains no sugar alcohols and does not case the laxative effect of some of the other sweeteners. It is composed of natural fiber obtained from Chicory Root, Calcium and Vitamin C.BENEFITS OF CHICORY ROOT:
1. CHOLESTEROL: It decrease the levels of serum LDL cholesterol in the blood.2. INFLAMMATION: It contains vitamin C, one of the most powerful antioxidants.
3. DIABETES: The inulin content is not digestible, so its lack of glucose can help promote optimal blood sugar levels while also increasing stool bulk and consistency.
4. CONSTIPATION: It provides soluble fiber, which improves digestion.
5. GALL BLADDER ISSUES: It builds your body's resistance to gallstones and liver stones. By increasing the flow of bile, it assists the body in digesting foods and liquids. The extra bile also helps break down fats in the body.Chicory root has a mild laxative effect, increases bile from the gallbladder, and decreases swelling.
6. URINARY INFECTIONS, KIDNEY STONES and GOUT: It has diuretic properties that provide protection for the urinary tract system and kidneys. Toxins are removed and the cleansing of the body is stimulated because of an increase in urine flow. It has been used to expel gravel, calcium deposits, and excess uric acid from the body, which helps to prevent gout and kidney stones.
7. WEIGHT LOSS: Chicory root benefits weight loss because of the effect it has on the digestive system. It is an excellent source of fructooligosaccharides which help promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in your digestive tract. It also increases the rate of the break down of fats. It also helps with weight loss because it helps keep insulin levels low while enjoying sweet foods.
8. NATURAL "Liver" CLEANSER: Chicory root also supports the body's detoxification system through the liver and kidneys, and is believed to help with calcium absorption. Chicory also helps prevent jaundice and an enlarged liver when mixed with water. Because of Chicory Root’s potential for removing contaminants from the digestive system, the liver does not have to work as hard to filter out toxins that may have escaped into the bloodstream. It also acts as a gentle laxative and diuretic for removing excess water and toxins, and this can also reduce strain on the liver.
9. ANXIETY: It is a natural sedative and anti-inflammatory for the nervous system. If you have anxiety issues and still drink coffee, this sweetener can help.
10: INDIGESTION: It acts as an herbal antacid, the root neutralizes acid and correct acid indigestion, heartburn, gastritis, vomiting, upset stomach. Because it stimulates bile production, this helps to speed up the digestive process after eating too much rich food.
With all those benefits, it makes my ice cream taste extra special! Happy Eating!
I liked you on Facebook a while back so I hope that counts! Now on to Pininterest...
ReplyDeleteMy favorite recipe so far is the Healthified Frosted Brownies. It's so good I served it at my Superbowl party. I'm trying the Healthified Zucchini Bread this weekend.
It's hard to pick a favorite recipe because I have loved all the ones I have made. If I had to pick a family favorite it would be the Greek Moussaka Lasagna.
ReplyDeleteI think I need to buy an ice cream maker now, because your mint choc chip recipe looks amazing!
I want to win a box of chocoperfection. I like your cabbage pasta!
ReplyDeleteI've liked you on FB and followed you in Pinterest for a while now :) It seems we have a new favorite recipe on a weekly basis! This week was your zucchini brownies combined with your tropical ice-cream :) Delicious!
ReplyDeleteI liked & follow all of your boards! We love your calzones!
ReplyDeleteI want to win!! :) I liked your fb page happy to have found you there. This week we have been enjoying you spice cake with frosting. I had to share with all my family because I was amazed at just how yummie it was.
ReplyDeleteI LIKED to FOLLOW you anywhere cause your the best!!! We love your healthified pizza crust and chocolate chip cookies.
ReplyDeleteWe love Enchilada Casserole from Healthy kids cookbook. I guess that is our latest favorite-actually we like ALOT of your recipes. Looking forward to your class coming up, too.
ReplyDeleteI live on your flax waffles for breakfast. :) I follow you on facebook and pinterest, too. I must try this ice cream recipe, soon.
ReplyDeleteWould love to win! Right now, I'm loving your bagel recipes. So many awesome recipes to choose from!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to win. I love your donut recipes.
ReplyDeleteI like you on FB! I would SO love to win these chocolate bars! Right now, our favorite recipe is your "healthified" sub bread or rolls...I've made 3 batches in the last week! I've been eating egg, turkey and avocado sandwiches...YUM!
ReplyDeleteI would love to win the chocolate bars! I have been making your sub recipe a lot lately, using them as buns for egg sandwiches in the morning. They're great!
ReplyDeleteI will gladly follow you where ever you go...you are awesome! I have loved so many of your recipes, but I think the most ingenius and versatile is the sub bread.
ReplyDeleteI follow you on facebook and pinterest. I love the lemon bars you healthified, they are my favorite! I hope i win, I want to try those candy bars so bad!
ReplyDeleteCan I use the Swerve instead of Just Like Sugar? Also, we have an ice cream maker that blends the icecream as it freezes. Would it work with this recipe?
ReplyDeleteYes, Swerve will work but the ice cream will get harder in the freezer than if you use Just Like Sugar. Yes, that ice cream maker should work. :)
DeleteThanks! A pinch of salt might help with the hardness in the freezer?
DeleteYes, it will help. :)
DeleteI'd love some of those ChocoPerfection bars! My favorite recipe so far (I've only tried a few) are the calzones!
ReplyDeleteHi, so far we love the "refried beans" since my family is a big mexican food fan and have missed being able to have them for so long. I made them the other night and they were so tasty! My husband and I loved your Rueben Enchiladas, love sauerkraut and who knew it was sooo good for you, now how do I get my teenagers to eat it? I've been trying to find "healthy chocolate" in grocery stores to try it out before I buy a huge quantity online! So it would be a great to win and be able to try them. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI'd would love to win this contest! I haven't tried any of the recipes. I'm a new low carber and I'm ordering two of your books today! I can't wait to try stuff out. I'm a pastry chef so I especially can't wait to get my hands on the sweets!
ReplyDeleteI would love to win these candy bars to try with all of my gourmet truffles I make. I'm curious to see if they work or not.
ReplyDeleteI like most of the recipes we try. I especially love the cream de mint brownies, spinach artichoke tart and protein donuts. I've altered your donut recipe and instead of the cocoa powder, vanilla, and cinnamon, I added 3 tbls of powdered pomegranate and 1/2 tsp of pomegranate flavoring (from my candy making supplies). They are super delicious with a fruity flavor my family loves. Of course not quite as low carb but still way healthier than store donuts!
I do have a question - how do you get your cookies so flat and perfect looking? Mine always seem think and bulky. Taste good but don't look as good as cookies made with sugar and flour.
I LOVE chocoperfection! I esp love their Dark Chocolate bars. My favorite recipe and go to weekend breakfast is the Dutch pancake.
ReplyDeleteI also always keep the sauce from your flappers recipe in the fridge at all times. it's a perfect honey substitute in sweet baked goods! I've always followed you on facebook, but now do it on Pinterest and twitter too!
ReplyDeleteMaria,
ReplyDeleteI want those chocoperfection bars so bad!!! I've been scouring my local health food stores and grocery stores and they are nowhere to be found. I thought about buying them online, but I just can't justify paying that much for chocolate since I just spent a ton healthifying my entire fridge and kitchen!!! I hope to try them soon! It's a shame stores such as Trader Joes and Whole Foods doesn't carry them.
Your recipes are awesome!! I've made the spinach artichoke quiche/tarte several times and I'm making it for Easter... So good!!! I also love your bagels (especially toasted with cream cheese)... What a treat! I am not on Facebook or Twitter so I can't follow you, however I am on your blog everyday and you've been so wonderful with answering my questions and emails! Thanks for all of your amazing info!! You are a lifesaver!!!
My favorite recipe is the caramel, it's incredible that you invented that manna! I also tried your "refried beans" using eggplant and they were amazing.
ReplyDeleteHow I would love to win these. I've been wanting to try them but they are very expensive! So I have only made three of your recipes so far. I am eating your Cream De Mint Brownies as I am typing this. They are delicious! I've made your Lemon Bars and Chocolate Zucchini Brownies. Honestly they are all so good. To pick one I guess I'm going to have to say the Chocolate Zucchini Brownies. They really are an amazing low carb dessert. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI would like to win the ChocoPerfection Bars. It is just me and my 8 year old daughter! I have not tried any of the recipes yet, being I JUST FOUND this page today!I would be interested in trying to make the Healthified Mint Chip Ice Cream! Chocolate Chip Mint is my favorite ice cream and I also LOVE CHOCOLATE!

ReplyDeleteI am following you on FB and Pinterest as well as your blog in my reader.
ReplyDeleteStill lovin' the donuts from your blog.
I would like to win the chocoperfection bars. Recently we have been making a lot of your "gnocchi" and we love it with zucchini sauteed in butter and shallots then seasoned with nutmeg and parmesan cheese. So delicious!! I think that's our favorite healthified meal right now. As far as desserts, we love your molten chocolate cakes.
ReplyDeleteHi Maria
ReplyDeleteI would love to win these bars! I've been sugar free for just over a week and all I can think about is desserts. I use pinterest as food p orn!
We most recently tried the recipe your husband posted, the pizza. I really enjoyed it, it kind of tasted like a wholemeal base. It was really good.
I've just bought your book, secrets to controlling your weight. Just wanted to say how much Im enjoying it. Its the first book Ive read that backs the science up with plain english examples.
Thanks for putting so much work into the book and this blog. We're both really benefiting from them.
Theresa
Dying to try ChocoPerfection! I do love all of your recipe remakes...lately I've been using your shamrock shake recipe. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI just ate your Healthified Chicken Salad all week. It was fabulous. Then I used the bones and carcus and made your bone broth. Next up Chicken and Dumplings! Thanks for all the grand ideas. You are a true inspiration and I love that you are into fitness and a great mom as well. I am now following you on Pintrest and Twitter. But I think you should get an Instagram, I love following pics of people's food!!!
ReplyDeleteLiked and followed!!
ReplyDeleteI would be thrilled to win!
Ever since I started reading your blog a few years back I have loved all of your recipes that utilize "healthified" cauliflower "rice"! It is such a great substitution - this "rice" has worked its way into so many of our family meals!
Thank you!
I would heart to win!
ReplyDeleteavocado brownies my favorite treat so far.
TORTILLAS!! Yeah to Mexican food!
ReplyDeleteSo, you're going to make me do the Sophie's choice between dark and milk chocolate . . . . hmm . . . . I'll go with Dark, under protest. :)
I would love to win! I really want to try these chocolate bars! I just made your bagels and my family loved them!
ReplyDeleteChristina Haynes
I would love to win!!! I never knew such a yummy chocolate existed without all the junk in it!!!! My husband is now obsessed with your protein pancakes (they're amazing!) and I am a huge fan of the protein bread and figuring out new ways to use it! I have celiac and have always hated the sugar crash I felt after having a gluten free hamburger bun or bread loaded with rice flours or other starchy ingredients. P.S. my husband has been used to choking down my various GF pancake recipes (and I've tried some really good ones which he usually doesn't mind eating) but he didn't believe me when I said that the protein pancakes were gluten free and he was even more shocked when I told him the ingredients! Thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteSamantha
Hi...I have been on your email list and following pinterest, and have tried several recipes...thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteDar
Hi Maria! My favorite recipe (hard to pick just one) but recently it is the Spinach Artichoke Tart. I love it, and you are right, it does taste like the unhealthy dip that I used to love. The marscarpone cheese is so fantastic in that recipe! Thanks for all you do -- I cannot express how much you have helped me!
ReplyDeleteVal :-)
Hi Val! You won! Just send Craig your address and he will get you box of ChocoPerfection bars sent right out! craigmaria at gmail .com
DeleteI am so excited! I sent Craig my address, and look forward to go back through all of your recipes and deciding how to use them! Thanks again for all of your expertise, willingness to share, and somehow knowing exactly what would be helpful to me (like the conversion chart for coconut flour -- amazing!)
DeleteVal :-)
I would love to win the chocolate bars! My family loves your healthified shamrock shakes, we make your pizza crust recipe once a week, and just made Mexican lasagna and LOVED it! Been following you on Pinterest and Facebook for awhile! Love your cookbooks too! Thanks! Sarah
ReplyDeleteAlready FB fan and follow you on Pinterest. After reading all these comments I have a lot of awesome recipes to try. Sub bread for me! Would LOVE to win chocolate bars! !!
ReplyDeleteHi Marie, would love to win the choco bars! Let's see, I bought the psyllium husk (stayed in my pantry for a bit - was afraid to try it!)and just last weekend made the tortilla (for a quesadilla)...YUMMO!! I'm Mexican and just knew I'd hate them but was desperate :) Glad I took the plunge. I used broth instead of plain water and cooked on the stove top. A reader of mine tried (bcs of my review) and said she liked the oven version better. I may try that today.
ReplyDeleteI follow on pinetrest and facebook..will most def follow on twitter!
We love the twice baked cauliflower!

ReplyDeleteAnother shot at winning ChocoPerfection Bars?? Yes, please!! And I'm anxious to try the ice cream with Just Like Sugar. Having a healthified one that stays creamy sounds great. ReplyDeletePlease enter me for the Choco-Perfection Bars. Would use in your chocolate raspberry cheesecake. We enjoy lots of your recipes but probably use the protein waffles recipe the most. Love the chili and snickers dessert in the summer.
ReplyDeleteWent grain-free, low carb tentatively last May. Now we "mostly" eat your way. Husband's glucose went down just enough not to be pre-diabetic any more. I lost 23 lbs and have kept it off! I cringe whenever I see the media and talk shows tout low-fat and whole-grain products as healthy for us.
Thanks for your enlightenment and for keeping up with your blog.
I only have to sign on as Anonymous because I don't use the other options.
Since diagnosed with Type 2 4 years ago, and committing to low carb, no recipes this non-cook, and non-baker tried worked...except yours!
ReplyDeleteYou have literally changed, and probably extended, my life. Now I can enjoy pizza, bread, pies, cookies, cakes for the first time in 4 years!
The bread has made a huge difference for me, but the French Silk Pie was the best thing I've ever managed to produce. Definitely commercial grade, in the nicest way that is.
I even linked to your 'sweet potato casserole' in my blog http://mindfullymanagingdiabetes.com (with your permission).
I am indebted to you, your wealth of knowledge and most of all, your tremendous talent for creating recipes and generosity for sharing them.
Josie
I love your pumpkin swirl cheesecake and chocolate chip cookies.
ReplyDeleteI just now am following you on twitter @wendiesioux
ReplyDeleteWow! What an awesome giveaway! Done, done, done, and done! :)
ReplyDeleteOk, so..I'm new to this way of eating, but so far, I think my favorite healthified recipe I've tried so far would be your Meatloaf Cordon Bleu. Loved it and picky hubby loved it too. Didn't even miss all the crappy carbs I used to add to it.
I'm feeling so good eliminating the garbage out of my diet and I thank you for all you do in providing all these wonderful recipes!

Not sure which recipe is my favorite, but so far I like making the sub bread (tried both the almond and coconut flour versions) and the protein buns for my sandwiches. :)

ReplyDeleteMaria thanks so much for your awesome recipes! My roommate and I are eating keto together and talk about you as if we know you. We keep each other motivated and it's really nice to have someone to share tips and recipes with, but honestly I don't think we could do it without your help. I would love to win the Chocoperfection bars so we can make your chocolate chip cookies. My favorite recipes of yours include anything with cauliflower and I especially love the turtle cheesecake (cannot believe how good it is!!!). Thanks for the chance to win!

ReplyDeleteHi Maria, I am a new "follower" and am so excited to try your recipes. I'm just learning about grain-free and sugar-free living. It is such a radical change for our family. I am so thankful to find your site because you make it look not only doable but even enjoyable! Thank you! I would love to try these chololate bars.
ReplyDeleteI am currentlyreading the third book I purchased of yours. I am now grain free and looking forward to good health for the rest of my life. I love your pancake recipe.
ReplyDeleteThank you! :)
DeleteI am wanting to make your cream of "whey" cereal. The ingredients call for 4 TBS vanilla egg protein/whey protein. I'm wondering if this means I can use either egg protein or whey protein? I'm obviously new to this :)
ReplyDeleteYes, that means egg white or whey protein powder. :)
DeleteWhat are the differences between Swerve and Just Like Sugar? Would you use the same proportions in a recipe? By the way, I listened to the Dr. Getoff podcast. His explanation of Truvia was an eye-opener. But that doesn't mean all erythritol is bad, is it? I take it the problem is the erythritol Truvia is using in its product?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Yes, a good non-GMO sourced erythritol (like in Swerve) is good. :)
